Information for Employers

HIV is a workplace issue that all employers should understand. HIV is on the increase and most people diagnosed are of working age.  Thanks to improvements in treatment, HIV positive people can now look forward to living long and productive lives. There is therefore an increasing probability that someone working in your organisation is living with HIV.

As a responsible employer, you want to recruit and retain an effective, high-quality workforce, and provide a fair, professional and supportive environment for staff. This means recruiting on the basis of ability and ensuring good employees do not leave as a result of prejudice or discrimination experienced in the workplace.

I doesn’t matter how big your business is or how many people you employ. You still need to be aware of how to manage and help people living with ’unseen’ long-term conditions like HIV, diabetes, asthma or arthritis.

As well as making sure you are a good employer, being sensitive to the needs of people living with long-term conditions can also improve how your business responds to other customers who might have similar requirements.

Making sure that you treat people fairly and are sensitive to their needs is a good way to ensure that your business is free from any action or behaviour that could be considered as ’discrimination’.
