Training for Employee Representatives

Many trade unionists have been hesitant about taking up HIV as an issue or feel that it is not relevant to them. There is also a mistaken view that HIV is no longer an issue.

However, trade union and employee representatives have an important part to play in ensuring that HIV positive workers, partners and dependants are not discriminated against or subjected to any form of harassment. They are also an important source of advice and support for those affected.

ACET’s training provides representatives with clear information about the facts and issues surrounding HIV including stigma and discrimination, confidentiality, health and safety and negotiating an HIV workplace policy. It also equips representatives with the information needed to provide practical support and advice for those affected.

Training topics include:

- Why is HIV an issue for Trade Unions?
- How HIV is spread
- Health and safety
- Negotiating an HIV Workplace Policy
- Support for union members affected by HIV
- Dealing with discrimination
- Leaving and returning to work

Learning outcomes:

By the end of the workshop participants will:

- Understand their role in promoting equality, anti-discrimination, respect and compliance with legal obligations and best practice at work for people living with HIV
- Know how HIV is spread and how to minimise any risk of infection
- Understand the importance of an HIV workplace policy and know how to contribute to its development
- Know how to support someone affected by HIV
- Know how to deal with prejudice and discrimination
- Understand the issues around leaving and returning to work and know where to get further information and advice
