ACET Jersey Marks World AIDS Day by Encouraging Islanders to ‘Act Aware'

Local charity AIDS Care Education and Training (ACET) and students from a number of schools will be marking World AIDS Day ( December 1st ) next week with a range of initiatives designed to raise awareness of HIV in Jersey and increase understanding about living with HIV and AIDS.

To launch the week-long programme of activity, ACET volunteers will be in St Helier (outside BHS) to offer information and collect donations, with the team returning to King Street to mark World AIDS Day itself.

Rosemary Ruddy, a Trustee of ACET Jersey, said of The World AIDS Day 2010.

"In 2010 the national theme for World AIDS Day was 'Act Aware', which is about pledging to help improve understanding surrounding HIV, prevent transmission and stop prejudice, and we will be supporting these messages through our activity in Jersey. Our team reached as many Islanders as possible throughout the week by building on our local campaign: 'HIV in Jersey: It is real, it is here. Take responsibility'.

"It is particularly pleasing that so many schools and youth projects will be undertaking their own initiatives to get students thinking about HIV and understand how they can protect themselves. This is a really important week for ACET Jersey, both in terms of allowing us to fulfil our educational objectives and giving us an opportunity to undertake fundraising."
