What is Oasis Esteem?
Oasis Esteem is part of Oasis Trust and a member of the ACET International Alliance. The Oasis Trust was founded in 1985 by Steve Chalke and now operates in 15 countries around the world.
Oasis is "Motivated by Christian faith, to work to transform individuals and communities by confronting injustice and promoting inclusion."
The Oasis Esteem programme recognises the urgent need for high quality PSHE to give young people a chance of a healthy life.
What does Oasis Esteem do?
They have been delivering high quality PSHE across the country since 1987, primarily focusing on Sex and Relationships Education.
The underlying principle of Oasis Esteem education is to provide quality information and facts to challenge young people’s attitudes and behaviour and to empower them to make positive, healthy life choices.
How is the resource delivered?
Local educators, who are supported by an Oasis Esteem Regional Co-ordinator, deliver the lessons. Educators are highly trained and committed individuals, predominantly drawn from the Youth Work and Church sectors. All Educators are trained to meet Government legal requirements for PSHE provision.
Before delivery Educators will spend time with you looking at your PSHE policy, and will discuss possible options for lessons. All Educators are required to adhere to the Oasis Esteem Education Approach, Education Charter and Working Agreements.
What does Oasis Esteem provide?
The Oasis Esteem programme is delivered in schools around the country. Based around the most recent government guidelines for PSHE teaching, and designed to:
- Increase self esteem and assertiveness
- Educate about the realities of STIs
- Examine the sources of teenage ideas about sex and relationships
- Challenge common myths
- Promote confident decision-making.
The interactive nature of the education provides maximum opportunity for the young people to take charge of their own learning.
Lessons develop skills, challenge attitudes and values, and develop knowledge and understanding. Together this ensures that the challenges set by the UK government’s 2003 sexual health report are being met.
Sex and Relationships Education
- We begin by asking the question ’what makes a good relationship?’
- We provide young people with the facts they need to make informed choices about their sexual health, including HIV/AIDS and other STIs.
- We address communication, respect, understanding, working with anger and managing conflict.
- We look at issues related to self-esteem.
- In line with World Health Organisation (WHO) guidelines, we present faithfulness and abstinence as healthy choices and inform young people of safer sex methods.
Please see the Education Approach and Education Charter for more information.
