Advocacy
ACET is committed to providing the best possible quality of life for all people living with HIV in Jersey through high quality support services and influencing, lobbying and campaigning.
People living with HIV are particularly vulnerable to discrimination, as HIV remains a highly stigmatised condition. One in three people diagnosed with HIV have experienced HIV-related discrimination at some time.[1]
ACET aims through its work to ensure that the rights of people living with HIV in Jersey are upheld and the law is framed and implemented to protect and promote the rights of people living with HIV. We do this by educating people such as employers about the rights of people living with HIV and by campaigning for changes to the law.
ACET works to influence attitudes, behaviour and decisions at all levels that have an impact on the lives of people affected by, and at risk of, HIV and AIDS in Jersey.
In particular, we campaign for:
- Political will, commitment and resources from a wide range of stakeholders for needs-based HIV prevention and testing, as well as encouraging evidence-based prevention programmes and initiatives.
-
- Equity of access to treatment, care and support for people living with HIV in Jersey by informing and influencing policy and decision makers at all levels to ensure that the needs of people living with HIV are understood and fully met through long-term strategies, management systems and the delivery of health and social care.
-
- An understanding and response to the needs of people living with, and at risk of, HIV which relate to poverty and social disadvantage.
-
- The rights of people living with HIV in Jersey to be upheld and law in Jersey framed and implemented to protect and promote the rights of people living with HIV.
-
- Eradication of HIV-related stigma and discrimination by: increasing media coverage of HIV and encouraging accurate, supportive and non-discriminatory coverage; increasing public awareness of HIV, ACET Jersey and the needs of people living with HIV in Jersey; and also increasing public support.
